WHEN COMPLEX WOUNDS ARE IGNORED
Left untreated, complex wounds can lead to diminished quality of life, all the way up to amputation. Even a small pimple or scratch that isn't getting better can become problematic.
CAUSES: Poor circulation, neuropathy, difficulty moving, systemic illnesses, diseases such as diabetes and vascular disease, age, radiation injuries, and repeated trauma are factors that can contribute to complex wounds.
WHAT IS "COMPLEX"?: A wound that doesn't respond to standard medical care within 30 days typically is considered "complex," although some wounds may take years to heal — or even never do so.
SIGNS OF A COMPLEX WOUND
- Slow healing
- Increased inflammation
- Exudate (fluid leakage)
- Swelling, pain, and stiffness in the affected area
