Vestibular Rehabilitation
Many things can cause dizziness. One of the major causes is your vestibular system (the inner ear-to-brain connection) for balance. The other systems that make up your balance or equilibrium are proprioception (which lets you know where your body is at all times) and vision.
Our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services Department has a program designed to treat certain conditions associated with dizziness and vertigo.
The first step is to see your family doctor and ask if vestibular rehabilitation or physical therapy could help. Your therapists will conduct a thorough evaluation, and based on the results, develop an individualized treatment program.
Lymphedema program
Treatment
Lymphedema is swelling in the arms, legs and/or torso, caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system, which prevents lymph fluid from draining properly. Our lymphedema therapists provide individualized treatment to minimize symptoms, restore movement and maximize comfort. In addition to providing treatments, we teach patients techniques to manage and control their condition on their own.
Control techniques include:
- Lymphatic drainage massage
- Compression bandaging
- Compression pumps
- Compression garments
- Exercise
- Education
- Dietary considerations
The dangers of ignoring lymphedema
The lymphatic system is an important part of the immune system. If left untreated, lymphedema can cause conditions that interfere with wound healing and increase your risk for infection. Also, the persistent swelling and inflammation can make affected tissue thick and hard, limiting mobility and ultimately worsening the condition.
